For Line Striping Maryland Is Worth Visiting

By Carl Watson

Pavement markings are designed to provide important information and communication to motorists and pedestrians as they use the road system. The markings are usually done following specific standards and regulations set and enforced by local, state, and federal governments. The regulations are meant to ensure uniformity on all roads so that the information that is communicated by the markings is standard. When in need of Line striping Maryland should be visited.

Currently, a wide range of materials are used in marking roads. The type of material used depends on the goals intended to be achieved. The goals to be achieved by the materials include compatibility with the site, cost effectiveness, and appropriate service life. In the US, the Department of Transportation is mandated with the responsibility of ensuring there is safety on all road systems.

The various materials that can be used to mark roads vary a lot in their service life and cost. Also, some materials are more appropriate for certain surfaces than others. The performance of pavement marking materials is usually dependent on various factors, including traffic volume, roadway surface type, and environmental conditions. These factors cause different levels of effect on markings in different places.

In the case of weather conditions, pavement markings are majorly destroyed by abrasion from snow removal activities. This happens in parts of the country that are affected by heavy snow. The equipment used to plow snow causes friction with pavement markings during snow removal. The faster rate at which markings in areas where snow is frequently removed deteriorates is a clear indication of this.

Recess pavement markings are used to curb the impact of snow plows on pavement markings. Recess marking entails installing the marking material into grooves. This prevents the material from being accessible to snow plowing equipment. In effect, the markings last longer although recess pavement marking is more expensive compared to standard marking.

The type of surface on which the marking material is applied can also affect its durability a lot. Surfaces such as Portland cement concrete and hot-mix asphalt have been known to affect the bonding characteristic of marking materials. That means that the bonding characteristic of the material is usually affected by the surface, which in turn affects durability. The volume of traffic experienced by a place usually affects durability of markings a lot. More traffic leads to faster deterioration.

The Department of Transportation has approved several materials to be used to mark pavements. Some of the most commonly used materials are epoxy, polyuria, water-based paint, preformed plastic, thermoplastic, and modified urethane among others. These materials also exist in more than one formulation in some cases. Every formulation must however be approved for use by the DOT. Some of these materials are also compatible with each other while others are not.

Compatibility between the existing material and the new material must be positive in case of re-striping. Otherwise, the existing material should be scrapped completely if it is not compatible. The installation process must meet some conditions for it to be effective. Factors such as pavement surface condition, material temperature, ambient temperature, wind velocity, and material application rate among others must be observed.
