Basic Tips In Avoiding Accidents In A Shipyard

By Dorothy Hall

Shipyards are where ships are built either for commercial, industrial or military use. They are also called dockyards where this term is more associated with the repairs and maintenance of the vessels. They are located nearby seas or tidal rivers allowing their ships easy access whenever needed.

It can be quite dangerous when working in places like these because of the different mechanical equipment being used for repairing and building. If you are an officer in charge of the workers in a shipyard Corpus Christi then taking care and keeping them safe is a must. Here are some essential information regarding work safety to avoid unwanted incidents from happening.

Proper training should be provided to the workers because when they know what they are doing then number of accidents would lessen. It would not necessarily mean that mishaps would not happen anymore though because the employees are still humans who make mistakes. But it is their responsibility to be safe by knowing how the equipment works.

There are tasks that should be handled by an employee who had a specialized training about it. They are more efficient on doing these tasks and handling the respective equipment necessary for it compared to others. When you let those that do not have the necessary training handle this then there are more chances of things getting out of control.

It is also essential for workers to be regularly briefed on the safety guidelines being followed in the workplace. It would serve as a reminder for them on the proper methods of doing their job that may have been forgotten due to many things. They must also have a training on first aid in case they need to help a fellow worker while waiting for the medics.

Make sure that working areas are not cluttered and remains clean by keeping things in proper places after being used. Tools and materials lying around might be the reason for other to get tripped and be on an accident. There may be instances that things might be left behind and it is important that they shall be cleared away in the pathways or everywhere else.

Safety measures and precautionary steps must be taken in ensuring the safety of the shipyard. This includes protective structures such as railings, mid rails and platforms and others that can help protect your employees from harm. This is essential so that when little mishaps like tripping happens, they would not fall directly but would be able to hang onto something.

Protective gears are essential and should always be worn whenever working inside the shipyard. Wearing them might save lives as they would lessen the severity or outright prevent some accidents from happening. Examples of these protective gears are helmets, gloves, goggles and others specific for particular jobs like flotation devices as well as body harnesses.

There are government standards to maintain the safety of workers and you should be informed about these so you can implement them. An open communication is necessary between officers and employees for easier coordination. Expert and senior workers are there for the newer ones to listen to their advice in ensuring safety.
