Searching For The Right Antique Car Storage

By Angela Williams

Classic car ownership is a popular hobby and pastime for many drivers and enthusiasts. Most of these older vintage cars are not used very often due to their age and value. Finding somewhere to keep a second or third vehicle can often be a problem and many owners will need antique car storage to protect their pride and joy.

If the car does not need special attention and security then a good place to find a place to store it is in your neighborhood. If any friends or relatives have spare garage space they may allow you to use it and this can save some money. Another option is to rent a garage from firms that offer lock ups and this can be a cost effective way to store a vehicle.

Specialized companies now operate who will look after a classic car for an agreed period of time. Many of these are simple lock up facilities where the owners will retain the keys and have access whenever they need to use it. Other firms will use large warehouse buildings and you may need to arrange an appointment with them if you need access to the vehicle.

Some antique cars may need more attention than others to keep them in good condition. In some cases the companies will loosen some components to prevent them seizing whilst in storage. Many cars will be raised off the ground to prevent any moisture getting to the underside and causing corrosion.

Other services offered for older cars are climatically controlled room to protect the vehicle. These rooms will be kept at a constant temperature and often the cars will be encased in a plastic cover with vents and heating elements. This method of storage is particularly beneficial to very old vehicles or ones that are only partially restored.

A lot of the larger car storage companies will offer additional services to make sure your vehicle is kept in good running order. Routine servicing can be done by their engineers as well as other repairs and modifications. Most reputable firms will also make sure your car is ready to drive when you collect it by ensuring it is clean and topped up with all necessary fluids.

If you are leaving your car to be stored it is imperative that the appropriate insurance policies are in place. Most companies will offer insurance cover if it is not included in their monthly fees but in some cases you may need to arrange additional cover. Cars are usually assessed when dropped off and any defects noted and pointed out to the owners.

When leaving a vehicle for long periods it is important to remove any personal items and anything that can be removed such as audio systems. Trunks should be emptied and ideally the car should be cleaned before putting it into storage. Many companies will also remove the battery to prevent it from running down and causing damage to the electrical system of your car.
